Climate Art Project

Together with our Czech partner “Limity jsme my” we are organizing theArt for the Climate” project taking place on the Czech-German border in Czech republic from end of April to end of June 2018.

Climate change is one of the biggest challenges that our society faces today. The international climate justice movement has been growing in recent years with the aim to bring attention to this issue and to stop use of fossil fuels. Art project in Czech republic is connected with the anti-coal activist movement in Czech Republic and Germany.

The “Art for the climate” project is organized in connection with the Czech climate camp, which will happen on June 27th until July 1st 2018. We invite local and international artists to take part and create activist art works with the theme of climate change and/or thematising the impact of coal mining. The art works should
be oriented towards public space and wide audience. The art works will be created during or shortly before the climate camp and they will be exhibited or used in actions. The form can vary from objects, banners, graffiti, inflatables, performance, screenings, symbolic tools for activists, action design, etc. There is a possibility of placing artworks in the vicinity of coal mine or in the village. For further impressions see attachment.

Informational meeting for the art project participants will be organized in Northern Bohemia on April 20th (starting 6pm) until April 22nd 2018 (finishing 5pm). During the meeting the participants will see the mines, visit castle on the border of a mine, meet activists and local inhabitants and learn about problems and alternatives connected with coal mining. Artist should take part in the informational meeting in April and also in the climate camp. The main venue for the project is the town Horní Jiřetín.

The Czech group Limity jsme my (We are the limits) and the german organization Klima*Kollektiv cover the travel costs and provide accommodation and food costs for the informational meeting and further material costs and honorarium for the production of the artworks (after the agreement with the organizers).

Aims of the art project:

  • using art as a tool for action
  • creating art works with the theme of coal mining or climate change, which can be used in protest or
  • exhibited in public space
  • communicating with wider audience and press by visual, playful and pictorial language
  • creativity of action as a message

Because of the rules of the funding we are especially looking for “german” artists (officially based there) at the moment but welcome also other interested artists! Places are limited.
